The Barracudas Water Polo Club has two licences and fields a Women’s and Men’s team in the Australian Waterpolo League (AWL) annually called the Brisbane Barracudas. This level of competition is the club’s high performance program and an integral part of the club’s elite player pathway from junior through to senior. The Barracudas have produced some of the country’s top elite players from youngsters in the Junior ranks and is the only Club in Queensland to offer players this pathway. Barracudas are foundation members of the AWL with the men competing since 1990 in the league’s year of inception much like our women who started in the first year of women’s national league in 2004.
Barracudas Australian Waterpolo League History
In 2004, the Barracudas men had a historic win, taking home the AWL trophy and national title after defeating Fremantle in the Grand Final. The win marked the first time ever that a Queensland team has won a Senior National competition in the sport. The Barracudas men have been a top contending team and have featured in the Finals Series for the last five season narrowly missing out on a podium finish.
The Barracudas Women’s are one of only two clubs nationally to have made the Final Series every season since the women’s competition was introduced. The team has been a major force in the league every season with the Barracudas Women taking out their first national league title in 2009 and then backing up three consecutive times to become the first team ever to take out that many titles in a row. In 2013 and 2015 the team once again created history winning their fourth and fifth national title respectively and now hold the record for the most consecutive Grand Final appearances with seven.
