2022 Water Polo Queensland Calendar of Events

Published Sun 16 Jan 2022

(The following update was issued by WPQ via Email 7th Jan 2022)

WPQ has developed a 3-5 year Competitions and Events calendar which appears on the WPQ website. This calendar aligns with the National Competitions and Events framework and provides greater planning certainty for all players and their families. Having an events and competitions calendar set well in advance also allows WPQ to leverage event funding opportunities with local governments and commercial partners.

Once again it will be a busy start to the year with the 2022 Summer Slam to be held in various venues across Brisbane from 10-13 Jan (16s & 18s) and the 17-20 Jan (20s). WPQ has entered 10 teams across the three age groups and numerous other Qld players have been selected to participate in the Barbarians Teams.

For the first time in 2 years, the Australian Water Polo League (AWL) will also kick off on Jan 26 with a new and exciting format. Spanning across 4 months (Jan to April), the AWL will be played in three phases with all teams participating in a tournament style event during Jan/Feb before moving to a home and away format during Feb/March and culminating in a 4 team round robin Finals Series in early April.

The 2022 Qld Country Championships will be held in Cairns from 18-20 Feb and the 2022 State Titles will be held in Brisbane (Chandler) from 2-5 April (14s & 18s) and 8-11 April (12s, 16s & Opens). This will be closely followed by the AYCs to be held at numerous venues across Brisbane from 14-18 April.

After a two year hiatus, WPQ look forward to participating in the North Qld Games from 29 April – 2 May in Townsville. The Australian Country and Masters Championships will also follow in May in NSW and ACT respectively.

In Sept/Oct the National 15s are scheduled to be played with Victoria to host the Men and Qld to host the Women, whilst the 14U Inter-State Challenge is also scheduled for Sept/Oct with the tentative venue being South Australia.

The Delfina Premier League will again be held during Oct/Nov and following a 2 year delay the Pan Pacific Masters Games are planned for early November.

WPQ plan to run and Boys and Girls All Schools event in Brisbane during late November, followed by the Qld Junior Country Champs scheduled on the first weekend of December.

To round out the year, the National 19s are scheduled to be played in early December with NSW to host the Men and TAS to host the Women.

Another busy calendar of water polo is planned for 2022 and we look forward to delivering all State and National events and competitions without the interruption of Covid.
